Gardens in Every School

every school yard will have a garden, growing herbs, and vegetables. They will learn food/health/environmental education in their classes tied in with the work they do on the garden. The school food will be from local farmers, featured chefs from local montreal restos who volunteer their time, and the students will learn how to cook using the food they have grown. This has been a very successful model in the US, starting with the Edible School yard in San Francisco- it is a movement that all parents, teachers and change makers should be a part of

Wow. This is a super cool idea. I read more about it here: http://www.edibleschoolyard.org/.

I am wondering if you've thought about how this might work as a business. Have you thought about that aspect?

As I am writing this I'm wondering if it may be a way to teach kids about entrepreneurship as well. At my son's school they ran a restaurant for a while and they learned all about planning a menu, hiring employees, managing teams, marketing, and customers. He found it really interesting and I loved that they were teaching these skills along with academics.

I work in Primary schools around Nottingham and this would take very little to put into practice- although I would caution against making it school led, as teachers have enough to do already- better to provide it as an externally led project that visits regularly and provide the initial tools, resources, know how and enthusiasm something as important as this would need- the schools would raise the cash to keep it going, as only schools know how!
A business opportunity, somebody? :)

1.find private funders rather than grants that are unreliable from year to year. Start a mission based organization with a clear vision for a sustainable food system that ensures community food security. 2. Not have it be "school led", but business led, where the school is for recruitment for a summer program. they remain involved during the year through internships and advocacy in the community.
3. Students will be diverse, from urban & suburban cities or from French and English neighborhoods.
4.Students will be employed during summer months to work on farms and participate in fun health/env.education workshops. They will also work at the farmers market, in soup kitchen and sell harvested food.
5. Students play very active role in advocacy, decision making, farm work through rigourous work, relevant work and they are given much responsibility= formula for youth success

Garden in every school is cool. And may I add?: Mini-gardens in every pots and pans not only in schools but also in the homes, churches and neighborhoods.

brilliant idea!!!!!!!!! :) :)

Aha! The edible outdoor classroom!

I really love gardens and everything they have to offer us and I decided to start my own business in vegetables industry. I also use some safety signs because it makes my entire work easier.

This a great idea. When I was in highschool, everything was so green. We were fortunately to live in an area where is the biggest park in the whole city.
ps: buyTamiflu for the children too, because, as I heard, the disease everybody talks about will spread quickly in schools.
